Summer AC tune-up for your HVAC unit

Summer is finally here in the Northeast. You may have been holding out for the sweltering days to turn on your AC, but the heat is upon us. Since your unit has sat unused through the winter and cooler months there are a few maintenance things that you should do to be sure it is in good working condition before you are caught with no AC on the hottest day of the year.

Air filter

The air filter in your unit is a key piece to making it work efficiently. It is a great time to take out the air filter and replace it with a new one. Dust, pollen and other allergens from the blooming plants have been trapped in the air filter.  Replacing the air filter will cause your unit to run more efficiently and the air to be healthier in your home. Less stress on your AC unit also means a longer life.

The outside part of your HVAC unit is the condenser. It is typically square or round and has venting on the outside with a large fan on the top. Check it out and make sure there are no debris or brush blocking it or that anything has accumulated around the unit. Make sure the grass does not grow within at least 6 inches away from the unit.

The coils on your unit function properly without concern for most of the time. However due to unforeseen things they could become bent or damaged which suppresses the air flow. It is a good idea to have a professional check and clean the coils of your unit every few years.

AC Tune-up

Another task that will help your unit run efficiently and be ready for the heat of the summer is to have a professional tune-up. Your HVAC technician will check your unit for leaks and be sure that everything is in proper working order. Your air ducts will also be checked for leakage. In order for your unit to run efficiently you don’t want to have improper seals in the air ducts causing unnecessary leaks. Any issues will be able to be repaired quickly.

Great time for an upgrade

Before it is too hot and you need your AC all the time you should consider an upgrade. Newer units are much more energy efficient which will save you money in the long run. Another option is to have a programmable thermostat installed if you don’t have one already. Programmable thermostat‘s are extremely helpful in regulating the air flow in your home and can also help save money in the long run.

Be sure to check your HVAC system this season.  It is also a great time for a tune-up or an upgrade while you’re at it. Call the experts at Air Expo New Jersey today to help you with all of your HVAC needs.
