Assessing Mechanical Problems with Your AC Unit

With all the work your AC unit does, it’s bound to make some noises. However, those noises should never reach a level where they interrupt your day to day life. If you find yourself turning your music up to hide the racket, there may be an underlying issue. Here are just a few reasons as to why your ac unit could be making so much noise.

Issues with your ductwork

Contrary to popular belief, sometimes the noises you hear aren’t coming from your unit at all, but rather coming from your ductwork instead. If there is any type of air or pressure built up in your ductwork, that can contribute to the popping noises that you hear every time your unit turns on. On the opposite side of the spectrum, if you have any type of cracks or seals that are loose, you may hear a loud hissing noise. Having your ductwork inspected annually will prevent any serious issues from occurring. It also ensures that if there are any current problems, you will have them fixed right away.

Parts that could potentially be loose

Loose parts can be the reason behind any rattling or clunking noise you hear when your unit is running. If the part is coming out of position, you will begin to hear a rattling noise. If these parts continue to rattle and shake, they can eventually fall out, which will cause severe problems within your unit. Fixing loose parts should be relatively inexpensive, compared to repairing the damage caused by avoiding the issue. As soon as you hear any type of rattling noise within your unit, it is imperative to have it checked to prevent any more significant problems from occurring.

Aging unit

A dependable air conditioning unit will last anywhere from 10-15 years with proper care and maintenance. Units should be inspected annually, but ideally, you should have your unit inspected and cleaned every six months. The newer the unit is, the quieter it will be, and vice versa. All of the noises you hear could possibly be from a worn-down ac unit that just needs to be replaced. If you’ve had your unit longer than you can remember, it may be time to replace it with a newer, quieter version.

There can be a plethora of reasons as to why your air conditioning unit is making funky noises. Any time you hear noises coming from your ac unit, it is best to immediately call an expert to take a look before things get any worse.
